Candi Stanton – “Young Hearts Run Free”

This song was taken from real life actual events of an abusive marriage and a woman desperately trying to escape. Written by Los Angeles-based songwriter/producer David Crawford at a time when Candi Staton was being forced to endure an abusive marriage to her third husband, Tyrone Davis’ former promoter. This song about marital grief was inspired by the stories that Candi told him about her difficult life with her husband. Candi Staton recalls: “We would sit down and I would tell him the horrors I was going through in the marriage I was trying to get out of. I would bring David incidents, and little did I know he was making mental notes and writing all that stuff down.

Released in 1976 on the album “Young Hearts Run Free” and peaked at # 2 in the UK and #20 in the USA.

What’s the sense in sharing
This one and only life?
Endin’ up just another lost and lonely wife
You’ll count up the years
And they will be filled with tears
Love only breaks up, to start over again
You’ll get the babies, but you won’t have your man
While he is busy loving every woman that he can, uh-huh
Say “I’m gonna leave” a hundred times a day
It’s easier said than done
When you just can’t break away
(When you just can’t break away)

Oh, young hearts run free
Never be hung up
Hung up like my man and me
My man and me
Ooh, young hearts, to yourself be true
Don’t be no fool when love really don’t love you
Don’t love you

It’s high time now, just one crack at life
Who wants to live in, in trouble and strife
My mind must be free
To learn all I can about me, uh-huh

I’m gonna love me, for the rest of my days
Encourage the babies every time they say
Self-preservation is what’s really going on today
Say “I’m gonna turn loose” a thousand times a day
But how can I turn loose
When I just can’t break away?
(When I just can’t break away)

Oh, young hearts run free
They’ll never be hung up
Hung up like my man and me
You and me
Ooooh, young hearts, to yourself be true
Don’t be no fool when love really don’t love you
Don’t love you

Oh, young hearts run free
They’ll never be hung up
Hung up like my man and me
My man and me
Oh-oh-oh, young hearts, to yourself be true
Don’t be no fool when love really don’t love you
It don’t love you

Oh, young hearts run free
They’ll never be hung up
Hung up like my man and me
My man and me
Oh, young hearts, to yourself be true
Don’t be no fool when love really don’t love you
Don’t love you

Oh, young hearts run free
They’ll never be hung up
Hung up like my man and me

  1. It’s been a long long time but I remember it…thanks though because I never knew what it was about.
There are two I think of when I think of bad marriages like that. Tina Turner and Ronnie Spector

    1. I never knew what it was about either. I always liked it and would sing my heart out each time I heard it. To be honest, I thought it was about a young man and woman deeply in love just wanting to be together and free to do their own thing. Lol

I was a naive teen when that song came out and didn’t have a clue.

        1. Yes, we do keep learning, don’t we?!
I feel for that writer, too. Good thing he thought to take notes. It turned into a nice song, with a groovy rhythm. It’s disheartening to know she went through an abusive marriage, but so happy she survived and moved forward in life!

            1. Phil Spector was an evil man. Ronnie is so blessed to have left alive. I will have to read up on their marriage a little more. I have heard a few of the horror stories of his past and what landed him behind bars.

I watched the movie “What’s Love Got to do With It,” and Ike Turner was another evil person, and wanted control. No one wants to be controlled, it’s not right. I am so happy she left with her life and moved forward to bigger, and better things.

              1. Yes they were both evil. Turner just seemed mean as a snake. Spector was really messed up in the head. Lennon said he pulled a gun on him before. It’s surprising he didn’t kill someone before he did
