Smokey Robinson – “Cruisin”

Crusin is a perfect song for Smokey Robinson with that sexy high tenor voice that has just the right sex appeal. This is a song that great on a candlelight dinner at home, with a little slow dancing or just sitting by the fireplace.  Whatever works, this song will help work it out!

Smokey Robinson told The Guardian’s 1000 Songs Everyone Must Hear supplement that when he wrote this song, his guitarist Marv Tarplin had already written the music. Smokey added: “He put it on cassette and gave it to me to write the lyric. As it turned out, it took me five years to write. I had the music, and that music is so intimate and sensual, but I couldn’t get the words. Then one day I got: ‘You’re gonna fly away and I’m glad you’re coming my way.’ And then I was driving my car down Sunset Boulevard and I heard that song by the Rascals, ‘Groovin‘ and I thought, ‘That’s it! Grooving.’ But then, no, it wasn’t intimate enough, it wasn’t sensual enough for the music, and that’s when I thought of ‘cruisin.’ You’d be surprised by how many people speculate on what Cruisin’ means, ‘Cruisin” is a word that I leave up to the listener. When you’re with the person you’re with, and you feel you’re cruisin’, it’s whatever you want it to be.”

“Crusin,” released in 1979 on the album titled “Where There’s Smoke” peaked at #4 on the US Billboard 100.

Notable covers include 1995 one by soul singer D’Angelo, which peaked at #53 in the US, and a version by Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis for the 2000 movie Duets, which topped the charts in Australia.

Song Lyrics

Baby let’s cruise, away from here
Don’t be confused, the way is clear
And if you want it you got it forever
This is not a one night stand, baby, yeah so

Let the music take your mind, ooh
Just release and you will find

You’re gonna fly away
Glad you’re goin’ my way
I love it when we’re cruisin’ together
The music is played for love
Cruisin’ is made for love
I love it when we’re cruisin’ together

Baby tonight belongs to us
Everything’s right, do what you must
And inch by inch we get closer and closer
To every little part of each other ooh baby, yeah

So let the music take your mind
Just release and you will find

You’re gonna fly away
Glad you’re going my way
I love it when we’re cruisin’ together
The music is played for love
Cruisin’ is made for love
I love it when we’re cruisin’ together

Cruise with me baby
Cruise, cruise

Baby let’s cruise, let’s flow, let’s glide
Ooh let’s open up, and go inside
And if you want it you got it forever
I can just stay there inside you
And love you baby

Let the music, take your mind
Just release and you will find

You’re gonna fly away
Yeah, I’m glad you’re going my way
I love it when we’re cruisin’ together
The music is played for love
Cruisin’ is made for love

I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it
I love it when we’re cruisin’ together
The music is played for love

    1. Hi Max, I hope you are having a great day!
That is so true, it gets no better than Smokey. His voice is amazing, and he seems to be aging well. Last night I was looking at some of his photos, and it sure looks as though throughout the years he was able to keep his weight under control. This is a great song…I really like it.

      1. I took off today so yes it’s a wonderful day and a beautiful day here. Smoky is just wonderful he has influenced everybody. I hope you are doing well also.

        1. So happy you all are having beautiful weather. Well, hopefully, the weather will remain that way throughout the weekend. Enjoy your days off.

We had nice weather Thursday, and again today. We have had some pretty cold days here lately. That’s been odd, we are usually already gasping for breath around this time of the year. I will say that I am happy we aren’t and pleased to have had the cooler weather. 😄
